For many men seeking a well-defined jawline and improved facial symmetry, jaw implants can be the solution. Top plastic surgeons can perform chin or jaw implant surgery to help patients achieve this goal. This procedure can add strength to a weak or recessed chin. By placing a custom-fit implant in the target area, many men find their self-esteem restored from this permanent solution. As this is an invasive cosmetic procedure, it should only be performed by a licensed plastic surgeon. Before consulting with a doctor about jaw implants, it can help to learn a little more about them to inform your conversation. With this information, you will be able to make the best medical decision possible.

What are jaw implants?

Jaw implants are typically made of silicone or polyethylene. The polyethylene implants are known as Medpor. In the case of both types, they are custom designed to fit to a patient’s individual face. Once implanted, it elongates the look of the chin to give the face a more pronounced jawline.

To achieve the desired jawline, the implant is placed by a plastic surgeon. The surgical procedure in which an implant is placed along the jawline is called jaw or chin implant surgery or genioplasty.  This surgery is a good option for both men and women who feel that their chin looks receding or smaller than the rest of their face. It can also help those patients who think their jaw is not defined enough. As mentioned, both men and women can benefit from this procedure, however, men more commonly seek this solution. When done by an experienced plastic surgeon, jaw implants can help balance out the proportion of all facial features.

What to expect from jaw implant surgery

Getting a jaw implant is typically an outpatient procedure that takes as little as one hour. There are a few different types of implants, depending on how much natural bone you have. A typical procedure is as follows:

  • You will arrive at your appointment. The staff will ask you to fill out the appropriate paperwork.
  • You will then be led to the room where the procedure will be performed and you will be prepped.
  • A nurse or the surgeon will give you general anesthesia.
  • Your surgeon will make the incision. To reduce scarring, he or she will make the incision inside the mouth.
  • He or she will then place the implant inside the pocket created by the incision along the jawbone.
  • Once the implant is placed, your surgeon will then close the incision. He or she will use stitches or sutures. The jaw and chin area may be bandaged.
  • You will wake up from anesthesia in the room it was administered. Your healthcare team will monitor your vitals to ensure you are recovering properly.
  • A loved one will come to the office to pick you up and take you home. Note: You should arrange for this prior to the procedure. You will not be able to drive that day due to the anesthesia.

It is important to note that in total, the procedure takes about an hour. This can vary based on how large the implant is and the technique your surgeon uses. Speak to him or her directly to learn more about your unique case.

What is recovery like?

Expected recovery time from jaw implant surgery depends on multiple variables. This includes the severity of the changes made to the shape and structure of the chin, as well as the patient’s overall health and wellness. Typically, however, recovery from chin implant surgery occurs after six to eight weeks.

After your procedure, you will see results immediately. However, the surgical area will be swollen and potentially bruised for at least a week. Manage swelling and bruising easily with painkillers. Cold compresses can also help. You should plan to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for a few weeks after your procedure, too. You should sleep with your head elevated and avoid sleeping face down to ensure the quickest, safest recovery. After about a week, you will return to your plastic surgeon’s office to ensure your recovery is going smoothly. At this appointment, your doctor will remove stitches and make any last recommendations to ensure lasting success.

Risks and side effects of chin implant surgery

The common risks of undergoing jaw implant surgery are the same as any cosmetic procedure. While it is generally safe, all cosmetic procedures carry some risk. This may include the following.

  • Facial swelling
  • Allergic reaction to the implant
  • Infection (In some cases, this can result in implant removal.)
  • Anesthesia complications
  • Long-term scarring
  • Bleeding and bruising
  • A shifted implant (If this occurs, corrective surgery may be necessary.)
  • Nerve damage

Please note that nerve damage, in particular, may include numbness of the lower lip and damage to the nerve that controls the muscles around the mouth. This can cause an asymmetric smile, drooling, or a lisp. These complications are usually temporary and improve over several weeks to months.
