Breast Reconstruction

The purpose of breast reconstruction surgery is to rebuild a breast following removal of the breast for breast cancer. This is done to restore a natural, symmetric appearance, maintain body proportion and will allow clothes to fit better especially bathing suits or lower cut dresses. It is either performed on one or both breasts. More commonly today, women choose to have both breasts removed and reconstructed as it usually optimizes better symmetry and minimizes concern about cancer developing in the opposite breast.

Breast Reductions

Large breasts can cause pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities, and low self-esteem. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is usually done to provide relief from these symptoms. Performed under general anesthesia, this procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body.

Mastopexy Aka Breast Lift

A woman’s breast may sag as a result of natural effects of heredity, gravity, pregnancy, aging, breastfeeding or weight loss. A breast lift is used to improve the shape of the breast and typically reposition the nipple to its youthful position. The techniques for breast lift have evolved over the years. The most common technique used in Dr. Berlet’s practice is a vertical medial pedicle mastopexy which is a procedure based predominantly on a rotation of the breast tissue to create a round, firm, youthful breast that will stand the test of time as opposed to the more common inverted-T incision which uses the skin to maintain the shape and position of the breast.
