About Liposuction
Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a suction cannula to remove diet-resistant, stubborn fat from around the body. Because it is so highly effective, liposuction is one of the most commonly requested procedures worldwide. (1) In the United States alone, liposuction has been the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for the last four years consecutively. (2,3)
SAFE Technique
Dr. Berlet performs liposuction using the SAFE (Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalization) technique, a body contouring approach widely recognized as one of the safest and most effective methods available.
Developed by board-certified plastic surgeons, the SAFE technique is designed to gently separate fat before removal and then carefully equalize the remaining fat layer. This advanced approach minimizes trauma to blood vessels and surrounding tissues while promoting smoother, more natural-looking results.
By reducing the risk of post-operative contour irregularities such as dimpling, grooves, and rippling, the SAFE technique helps create a more even, refined body contour with a smoother recovery and beautiful long-term results.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for liposuction if you have been struggling with stubborn fat around your figure and wish to achieve a more slender, sculpted silhouette. Dr. Berlet can target fat in several areas of the body, including the:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Knees
- Inner Thighs
- Outer Thighs
- Calves
- Ankles
- Back
Liposuction can also address fat deposits in the face and neck, breasts, and more. To undergo this procedure yourself, you should be in good general health without any underlying medical conditions that may affect your recovery or results. You should also be at a stable, maintainable weight, as future weight fluctuations can affect your results. Additionally, you should maintain realistic expectations regarding your results and lead a nicotine-free lifestyle or be willing to quit smoking entirely. Dr. Berlet will assess your candidacy during your personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
Your personal consultation is an opportunity to gain more insight about liposuction, finalize your candidacy, and build a more meaningful relationship with Dr. Berlet. During your initial visit, he will review your medical history, discuss your concerns, learn more about your goals, and perform a physical evaluation. Using this information, Dr. Berlet will then recommend an approach based on the region(s) you wish to address and the amount of fat present. Depending on your desired results, he may also suggest integrating other procedures into your treatment plan.

Preparation
Once you have decided to proceed with your liposuction procedure, Dr. Berlet will give you detailed instructions. Your directions may vary, but you can expect to be advised to:
- Refrain from taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties.
- Ask a trusted friend or relative to drive you home after your procedure and, if needed, assist you for the first several days of your recovery.
- Make arrangements to take time away from your professional responsibilities and personal commitments.
- Before your procedure, pick up any medications you will need for your recovery. This ensures you have them ready for when you need them.
- Stop consuming any nicotine or alcohol in the weeks before your appointment, as well as the weeks after it.
Procedure
Dr. Berlet performs each liposuction procedure on an outpatient basis. If you are addressing specific trouble spots, he will elect to use local anesthesia. If you are interested in more extensive recontouring, you will receive general anesthesia.
Dr. Berlet will first inject the targeted fat deposits with a tumescent fluid. (1) He will then insert a cannula through an incision and move it back and forth. This cannula will emulsify the local fat deposits before suctioning them out of the body.
As Dr. Berlet repeats this process, he will carefully sculpt your figure to accentuate your natural muscle tone and contours.
Recovery
After your liposuction procedure, you will need to take some time away from your professional and personal responsibilities to focus on your recovery. You can expect to experience some initial swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the treated areas. These effects will subside as you continue healing, but you may also manage them with rest and the medications Dr. Berlet prescribes. He will also have you wear a compression garment, which will limit further swelling and protect your new curves.
You will be able to return to most of your daily activities within several days to one week, though the exact timing may vary depending on the scope/scale of your procedure. We recommend that you take light walks to improve your circulation when you feel ready to, but you should refrain from any demanding or strenuous tasks until Dr. Berlet has given his approval. Throughout your recovery, he will also have you return for follow-up appointments to assess your progress and development.
Endermologie
Dr. Berlet’s recovery features endermologie, a machine-assisted massage system that features suctioning and rolling pins to knead out any fluid or blood that may have accumulated in certain areas. This is a form of lymphatic massage, a style of massage that uses slow repetitive movements along the lymphatic channels to help reduce fluid buildup in the body. Research has shown that undergoing lymphatic massages after surgery can improve results and prevent certain post-operative complications. (5)
Endermologie is typically used two or three weeks after the initial procedure, once many of your initial recovery effects have dissipated. Dr. Berlet will discuss scheduling these treatments once he has had a chance to assess your postoperative development.
Results
The results of liposuction are generally permanent, as the treated fat cells cannot return after removal. However, the surrounding fat cells can still swell, making it crucial that you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.
